Within Hunters Creek Village’s small-but-mighty two square miles are 22 miles of streets and more than six miles of hiking and biking paths. Located just east of the inner loop, this west Houston neighborhood is part of a cluster of six independent cities known as the Memorial Villages.
“There’s a beauty in Hunters Creek that’s found in the sprawling lots on unique, tree-lined lanes,” says Vickie Driscoll, who began her real-estate career in the ’90s and has since focused her expertise in the Memorial area, especially Hunters Creek. “For me, there was something special about helping people buy and sell in my favorite part of Houston.”
Driscoll highlights that this village affords the serenity of suburban living, but with a close-in location to the world-class shopping and dining of downtown and the Galleria area, along with easy access to the Energy Corridor.
As a Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens docent at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Driscoll is particularly interested in the rich history of Hunters Creek. It adds to its allure as one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in Houston.
“During the 1930s, Houston equestrians would ride through and water their horses at the creek; some built weekend homes and hunting lodges,” she says. “By the ’40s, some had built permanent residences, including one hospitable family who built a pool and held an open house for the neighbors every summer afternoon. You can still find that spirit of camaraderie today!”
Driscoll has been a resident of the Memorial Villages for more than 30 years. Here are a few of her personal favorites about life in the Hunters Creek area.
Where to eat & drink
Carrabba's — the original on Voss — is where you’ll find Driscoll. “It’s a Houston icon and a neighborhood staple. I like the fact that when I go, I’m sure to run into friends.”
Where to play
“Hunters Creek is so well-located and not far to great shopping, including the Galleria, River Oaks Shopping District, Highland Village, and CityCentre,” says Driscoll.
She also mentions that it's a straight shot down Memorial to Memorial Park, which is not only an incredible place for all types of recreation but also hosts a number of programs and events.
Where to live
In Hunters Creek Village, you can enjoy a respite from busy city life with meandering lanes featuring homes that are tucked far back on stunningly wooded lots — many of which are more than half an acre.
Homes vary from a brand-new transitional mansion to a charming midcentury mod, Driscoll advises. “It’s so special here — it’s unlike any other area of the city.”
She also mentions that residents choose Hunters Village because of its superior school system and private police that have a special watch program. “They will keep an eye of your home if you are going out of town,” she exclaims.
