Grocery war Sprouts in Houston: "Less expensive Whole Foods" makes a move into the Loop
Sprouts Farmers Market, the Phoenix-based natural foods store that a friend of mine calls a "less expensive Whole Foods," is continuing its Houston expansion with its first inside-the-Loop location.
The Houston Chronicle reports that the chain will occupy around 28,000 square feet in a new shopping center on the former site of San Jacinto Stone at the southwest corner of I-10 and Yale. The shopping center, called Yale Street Market, will also include an LA Fitness and Guitar Center. It is located next to the Walmart center in the Heights area.
Sprouts currently has four locations in suburban Houston, including Katy, Copperfield, Cypress and west Houston.
Last summer the owners of San Jacinto Stone sold the eight-acre property, where it had operated for 68 years, to Ponderosa Land Development and moved to the southwest corner of Westpark and 610 in Bellaire.
