Houston's surprise Spanish luxury: $1.3 million home's all about community — and being close to downtown
Editor's Note: Houston, the surrounding areas and beyond are loaded with must-have houses for sale in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. In this continuing series, CultureMap snoops through some of the best and gives you the lowdown on what's hot on the market.
Own a bit of Southern Spain right here in Houston with a luxury "pueblo blanco" at 134 Calle Catalina Place in Cáceres, an eight-acre gated, master-planned community located just minutes from downtown.
A bit of background
Located off Reinerman Street in the heart of the Rice Military area, Cáceres is a contemporary interpretation of the "pueblo's blancos" of Andalusia, Spain, where the traditional style of homes, villas and townhouses stand with whitewashed walls topped by red tile roofs surrounding a large public plaza. Cáceres was co-developed by Yancey-Hausman and Röhe & Wright Builders and designed by Preston Wood & Associates.
Walk through
Enter the custom stucco-clad home on this quiet cul-de-sac through a double-wrought iron gate leading to private courtyard with pool and fountain. Up the wrought-iron staircase takes owners to the first floor of the four-story residence, the foyer welcoming with travertine floors and recessed lighting. Find a guest or secondary bedroom just off the entrance, with full bath and French doors for access to the courtyard. The game room presents itself as a versatile space, easily redesigned as a media area, fitness center or another bedroom.
The entire community is built around a centered park with swimming pool and cabana, where wine tastings and family movie nights are held throughout the year.
An ornate spiral staircase leads to all four stories, as does an elevator, with the main entrance on the second level — the heart of the home with dining room, formal living room, powder room and kitchen. The cooking hub features professional Viking appliances, marble countertops and butler's pantry and is open to the large den.
The third floor is the owner's retreat, with alder wood-paneled study and hallway gallery to the spacious master bedroom. The master bath offers double sinks, whirlpool tub and seamless shower doors. The walk-in closet is enormous and designed with lots of built-ins. The master suite also includes a private porch and pergola.
A mini-kitchen with built-in refrigerator greets owners at the fourth story, with another bedroom and en suite bath to the side. From the rooftop terrace, one can enjoy the outdoor seating area surrounding a gas-log fireplace — and fantastic views of downtown.
Step outside
Private gardens and grounds are well-manicured. The entire community is built around a centered park with swimming pool and cabana, where wine tastings and family movie nights are held throughout the year. A very popular activity for residents is viewing Fourth of July fireworks shows produced by River Oaks Country Club, Houston County Club and the city.
