    Cliff Notes

The perfect gift for the woman in your life: It's all in the stars

    Clifford Pugh
    Dec 21, 2009 | 4:00 pm

I hate shopping for Christmas gifts. No one I know really needs anything and everyone is so picky. So this year, I looked to the stars for guidance.

While I'm not a big follower of astrology, I have noticed that people born in certain months have similar traits. Librans are warm but indecisive (that's me). Scorpios and Aries are quick to explode but never hold a grudge. Virgos are methodical while Capricorns never seem to have money issues. So I’ve come up with a “shoppers horoscope” that may help in the search for a last-minute gift for your wife, lover or friend.

    Sagittarius (November 23 – December 21)
As the sign of the archer, you’d much rather live under the stars than under a roof. Since sporting activity is in your DNA, you naturally gravitate toward comfortable clothing — long flowing skirts, loose-fitting jeans, hiking boots and sandals. Only natural fibers touch your body. Your motto: Have Bag Will Travel, so a carry-all makes a good gift. It’s time to camp out.

    Capricorn (December 22 – January 20)
Lucky you. You’ll always have money in your pocket. Perhaps because you don’t spend it wildly. You dress for success and it shows. You’re more comfortable in a business suit than a pair of sweats. And you favor a sensible heel over a sandal. Your closet may not be packed, but every piece is a classic. Your sign may be the goat but you will never look like one.

    Aquarius (January 21 – February 19)
Admit it. You like to be a little unpredictable. So you’ll take a chance on a trend or go high/low and combine a Gap T-shirt with a Valentino skirt, like Sharon Stone once did at the Oscars, just for shock value. This is the dawning of a new age. So really mix it up good. Combine a dramatic pair of knee boots, designer clutch and family charm bracelet with a basic business suit. You’ll always be a fashion maverick. Don’t change now.

    Pisces (February 20 – March 20)

As the sign of the Fish, water rules your life. So it’s no wonder that you gravitate to deep sea blues and greens, amethyst and aquamarine. That dreamy quality dominates your wardrobe. You prefer floating chiffon and shimmering silk to worsted wool or cotton. Above all, you treasure beautiful things. That’s why jewelry holds such power over you. Dream on.

    Aries (March 21 – April 20)

As the first sign of the Zodiac, you’re used to being the leader. You’re out there with the latest trends and you like to play with fire. Your favorite ‘70s band, Foreigner, says it best, “Hot blooded, check it and see.” At a holiday party, you’ll compete with Scorpio to attract the most attention. But you’ll probably draw more raves because of your superior ability to accessorize. Flashy hoop earrings or dangly charms and a matching ring provide the perfect conversation starter. And we know how you love to dish.

    Taurus (April 21 – May 21)

You have a lot of good traits. You’re warmhearted and loving. But as the sign of the bull, you sure can be stubborn. You hold out for what you want and it’s usually a designer label, from Godiva to Cartier. Taurans love the best of everything – and know they deserve it.

    Gemini (May 22- June 21)

As the sign of the twins, you like to double your pleasure and double your fun. Your dual personality gives you lots of flexibility and a gift-giver a lot of options. You may be a button-down weekday warrior but, come weekends, you’re ready to channel your inner flower child.

    Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

Heaven knows, with you, anything goes. You are a sensitive soul and a bit moody, so there’s no telling what you might wear to a holiday party. Even if you’re in a traditional frame of mind, your look is very feminine. You're liable to wear luxurious lingerie under a conservative dress or suit to remind yourself of your true personality.

    Leo (July 23-August 23)
As your favorite colors are golds, yellows and oranges (the sun is, after all, your ruler), you’ll be thrilled to know that these hues are popular right now. So a little yellow something might make a nice holiday gift. You are the lion after all, and you like to roar.

    Virgo (August 24- September 23)

Your ironing board is your best friend. You are so meticulous that you would never leave the house with a wrinkled pleat. Maybe that’s why your clothes are simple, tailored and last a lifetime. Value is important; you don’t mind spending on something nice if it lasts forever. The best way to get on your good side: A classic gift, like a basic white blouse. Your sign is the virgin and white signals purity. But you can be a hopeless romantic, too, particularly around the holidays. So look for the mistletoe!

    Libra (September 24- October 23)
You love to shop. Duh. All your friends already know that. Maybe that’s why they make excuses when you’re ready to hit the mall, because you can never make up your mind. When you look in your closet every morning, you see at least a dozen options. On the other hand you are sooooo easy to impress because you appreciate the finer things in life and absolutely adore luxury labels.

    Scorpio (October 24 – November 22)
Drama is your middle name. With your hypnotic gaze, sensual nature and aura of mystery, you’re always the center of attention. Since you love to be the life of the party, this is your most wonderful time of the year. Your favorite colors — red and emerald green — are so seasonal. Or you could do your own thing — you always do — and wear basic black pants — a staple of your wardrobe — with a sparkly top. Get ready to shine.

FIGS will open its new Rice Village Community Hub on December 6.

Healthcare apparel company FIGS is opening its first brick-and-mortar store in Texas with a new Community Hub in Rice Village. The retail space is designed to serve both as a store and a gathering spot for the city's healthcare community.

The Rice Village location opens this Saturday, December 6, with a public grand opening event on December 13 from 6 to 8 pm featuring giveaways, music, food, and drinks from local vendors. Joining outposts in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and New York City, the Houston location is the fourth Community Hub for the company and the only location in the South.

The store will carry the full range of FIGS products, including scrubwear, loungewear, and accessories. It will also host events and programming focused on healthcare topics, offering visitors opportunities to meet and share experiences.

At the new FIGS boutique, shoppers will find the Color Clinic, offering scrubwear in core colors with rotating seasonal options. The store also has a Customization Station, which provides embroidery for names, titles, practice or hospital logos, and local icon options available only at Community Hubs. Personalization is also available for scrub caps, outerwear, and accessories.

The brand, founded in 2013 by Heather Hasson and Trina Spear, is known for fashion-forward medical uniforms made from a proprietary fabric with four-way stretch, antimicrobial technology, moisture-wicking, and wrinkle resistance. Hasson and Spear began selling directly to healthcare workers in Los Angeles-area hospital parking lots before growing their presence as an online retailer.

CEO and co-founder Trina Spear believes Rice Village was the perfect choice due to its proximity to the Texas Medical Center. She said the company wanted a space that supports Houston healthcare professionals and gives them a place to shop and connect.

"Houston is home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, and we are honored to bring a FIGS Community Hub to this city. This space is designed to serve and celebrate Houston healthcare professionals," said Spear. "Our Community Hubs create opportunities for customers to not only shop in a way that never previously existed, but to connect with each other and with FIGS on a deeper level."
