Tom Koch was plastered with Channel 13 logos that spelled out his name. Channel 39's Mia Gradney dotted her skinny jeans with colorful doodads while 1560 The Game's Raheel Ramzanali wore DayGlo green leggings and supersized sunglasses.
But no one could "out-Bad Pants" me at the kickoff fashion show for the 13th Annual Bad Pants Open Golf Tournament at Texas Children Hospital's Feigin Center Tuesday.
Of course, I had some help.
CultureMappers picked a winning design from four entries by students in the Houston Community College fashion design program. You chose a really bad pair of pink plaid pants with green pockets and magenta pom-pons designed and made by Will Baldwin. I accessorized the outfit with pink tights from American Apparel, a pink Ralph Lauren polo shirt and Kangol cap from a resale shop on lower Westheimer (Baldwin added a pom-pon to the hat) and a pair of custom-made Vans sneakers I picked up at New York fashion week.
As you can see, it made for a really awful combination.
I can't wait until Baldwin is famous and I can sell photos of myself in his design to the National Enquirer. (In his defense, the pants are really well-made.)
Bad Pants fashion show emcee David Nuño, host of a weekday radio sports show with Ken Hoffman on 1560 The Game, came closest to out-Bad Pant-ing me. HCC fashion student Francisco Castillo, who placed a close second in the CultureMap competition, agreed to whip up his design— a pair of bell bottoms of various monkey print, plaid and solids — for Nuño. The pants are perfect for a '70s-themed disco party.
In addition to media celebrities, the show included parents and children who were treated at Texas Children's. Backstage, one mother told us about her two-year-old who weighed only 14 ounces when born prematurely at the hospital. The toddler scampered around the room as we spoke. Just about every family had a similar story to tell.
The Bad Pants Open will take place at The Clubs of Kingwood Oct. 13. All proceeds go to Texas Children's Hospital Newborn Center.
