Wings over Houston: Dolce & Gabbana transform Kylie Minogue into Aphrodite
For Kylie Minogue's Aphrodite tour at Verizon Wireless Theater tonight, the singer has pulled out the big guns. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the Italian duo behind Dolce & Gabbana, designed an Ancient Greek-themed wardrobe that includes female dancers in skimpy togas, men in Trojan armor and, for Minogue, feather-heavy "angel-wing outfits that would make Icarus jealous," according to a review in the New York Post.
Her glittery gladiator sandals are by Christian Louboutin.
Minogue, known for her eye-catching, often kitschy costumes, rolls across the stage from a gilded chariot pulled by male dancers wearing skimpy leather straps, appears on the winged horse Pegasus and in a clam shell, à la Botticelli's Venus.
“Kylie has always been our “Piccola Principessa” (Little Princess), not just because of our work together but more so because of our friendship! Working with Kylie has always been very spontaneous and easy. We are given free reign to create because she trusts that we know exactly what she likes," the duo said in a statement.
During the concert, Minogue, 42, whips through eight costume changes "with Cher-like precision," writes the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The wardrobe was built around a golden corset designed so that that the Australian pop icon can move around freely while she sings.
This is the third Minogue tour in which Dolce & Gabbana have designed the costumes. The duo has also created corsets for Madonna and Lady Gaga.
As a tie-in with the tour, the designers are looking for someone to create a T-shirt for Minogue inspired by the show. To enter, go to Talenthouse.com and upload a jpeg of the design. Hurry, because the contest ends Wednesday.
