NEW YORK — He barely looks old enough to vote. But 32-year-old designer Jason Wu has burst on the fashion scene since first lady Michelle Obama tapped him twice to create gowns for her husband's inaugural in 2009 and 2013.
Wu's fall collection, which he will showcase in Houston at the Best Dressed Luncheon on March 26, is among his most sophisticated yet, featuring classic looks jazzed up with thigh-high slits, plunging V-necklines and, in some cases, see-through patterns.

Labeling the collection "strength through seduction," Wu highlights traditional fall colors of hunter green, camel and black with a pop of red thrown in a couple of simple but dazzling dresses and a red blouse tied at the neckline, paired with a sexy black crocodile skirt and sensible brown double-face cashmere coat. (I always tell social figures that the easiest way to get noticed by photographers is to wear red because the camera loves the strong color.)
The collection looks polished and expensive, with skirts and tops made of crocodile, fur vests and coats. But it's sensible too, with detachable linings and removable fur pieces that offer versatility and make more sense in the Houston winter climate.
Though featuring mostly day wear, including some terrific pants and blouse combos, Wu includes a few evening looks with enough sparkle to impress onlookers.
While his designs are not overly flashy, he offers the well-heeled woman a way to look her best. The London-based Independent calls him the "Oscar de la Renta of the digital age" because his clothes appeal to the needs of the affluent customer.
At this stage in his career, that's not a bad place to be.
