This weekend, America celebrates its birthday with a boom. (Check out our big list of Fourth of July fireworks and events here.)

We'll also see some big names coming to town — Dave Chappelle, Willie Nelson, and a really, really big shark. Asia Society goes Bollywood via a fun film screening, the Post downtown hosts a french toast pop-up, and Ru-Paul makes Sunday a real drag (show).

Enjoy; here are your best bets for the weekend.

    Thursday, June 29

Houston Museum of African American Culture presents “El Franco Lee II: Career Survey” opening reception

This exhibition is the first solo museum exhibition by Houston-based artist El Franco Lee II. El Franco aptly refers to his style as Urban Mannerist Pop Art as the bizarre and grotesque come together in his paintings in ways that feel illogical, but perfectly balanced. This retrospective survey is a collection of 30 works created over the past 16 years of the artist’s professional career. Through Saturday, September 2. 6 pm.

    Improv Houston presents Marlon Wayans

For a while there, Marlon Wayans was Team Netflix. His first standup special, Woke-ish, premiered on Netflix in 2018, and he’s been in the Netflix movies Sextuplets and The Curse of Bridge Hollow. But, lately, he’s been doing his best work on HBO Max. His latest special, God Loves Me, has him hilariously breaking down the infamous Oscar slap, as well as his relationships with the principal players involved. Catch him this weekend as he does a couple nights over at Improv Houston. 7:30 & 9:45 pm (7 & 9:30 pm Saturday; 7:30 pm Sunday).

Asia Society Texas Center presents Bollywood Film Nights: English Vinglish

Asia Society Texas Center will celebrate hits from Bollywood cinema with its Bollywood Film Nights series. Guests must bring their own lawn chairs, blankets and snacks to enjoy the show. Food, drinks, and snacks will be available for sale at the screening. 8:30 pm.

    Rocket Dog at Discovery Green

Built by legendary art car artist Rebecca Bass (she did the iconic Stevie Ray Vaughan car), Rocket Dog is Discovery Green’s official mascot. Along with her students, Bass created an “art cart” in 2007 to celebrate the opening of Discovery Green. The cart is filled with lawn games such as bocce ball, horseshoes, and more for patrons to borrow while visiting the park. An ID is needed to borrow games and will be returned to you when the borrowed games are returned. 10:30 am.

Benefit Betties Stars & Stripes Soiree

The Benefit Betties are back with their signature brand of bombshells & burlesque, this time with a hoppin’ Hanger Dance & dazzling variety show soaring over at the 1940's Air Terminal. So, catch him this weekend and see if he does a show that’s under three hours. 7:30 pm.

    Sunday, June 2

Alamo Drafthouse Houston presents Jaws Movie Party

It’s the movie that perfected the summer blockbuster and launched a million toothy (and goofy) knock-offs, but none of them can compete with the bite of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 original. As if that wasn’t enough, this is a Movie Party, so you can live the shark-hunting adventure along with your pals Brody, Hooper, and Quint – minus the salty sea air and actual mortal peril. Featuring shark hats, yellow floatie drink holders, and other surprises, it’s the most fourth-wall-busting fun you can have on dry land. 2:45 and 6:30 pm.

Outlaw Music Festival with Willie Nelson and Friends

Who doesn’t love Willie Nelson? The man is a country-music icon, a proud Texan, and someone who always knows where to get the best weed. The Outlaw Music Festival Tour continues the celebration of Nelson’s legendary life and legacy in his milestone 90th birthday year. Performing in The Woodlands will be Willie Nelson & Family, Whiskey Myers, Brittney Spencer, Particle Kid, and more. Nelson is touring in support of his 99th album, I Don’t Know A Thing About Love. 4:35 pm.

RuPaul's Drag Race: Werq the World Tour

Asia O’Hara, Bosco, DeJa Skye, Jujubee, Lady Camden, Laganja, Vanessa Vanjie and select finalists from Season 15 of RuPaul's Drag Race will serve a whole lotta face and help free minds during the Werq the World Tour, the world’s largest drag production. You gotta give these performers props for coming down here and doing their thing in a state where certain people think these divas are coming for their children. 8 pm.

Star TV producer James L. Brooks stumbles with meandering movie Ella McCay

    Emma Mackey in Ella McCay.

The impact that writer/director/producer James L. Brooks has made on Hollywood cannot be understated. The 85-year-old created The Mary Tyler Moore Show, personally won three Oscars for Terms of Endearment, and was one of the driving forces behind The Simpsons, among many other credits. Now, 15 years after his last movie, he’s back in the directing chair with Ella McCay.

The similarly-named Emma Mackey plays Ella, a 34-year-old lieutenant governor of an unnamed state in 2008 who’s on the verge of becoming governor when Governor Bill (Albert Brooks) gets picked to be a member of the president’s Cabinet. What should be a happy time is sullied by her needy husband, Ryan (Jack Lowden), her agoraphobic brother, Casey (Spike Fearn), and her perpetually-cheating father, Eddie (Woody Harrelson).

Despite the trio of men competing to bring her down, Ella remains an unapologetic optimist, an attitude bolstered by her aunt Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis), her assistant Estelle (Julie Kavner), and her police escort, Trooper Nash (Kumail Nanjiani). The film follows her over a few days as she navigates the perils of governing, the distractions her family brings, and the expectations being thrust upon her by many different people.

Brooks, who wrote and directed the film, is all over the place with his storytelling. What at first seems to be a straightforward story about Ella and her various issues soon starts meandering into areas that, while related to Ella, don’t make the film better. Prime among them are her brother and father, who are given a relatively small amount of screentime in comparison to the importance they have in her life. This is compounded by a confounding subplot in which Casey tries to win back his girlfriend, Susan (Ayo Edebiri).

Then there’s the whole political side of the story, which never finds its focus and is stuck in the past. Though it’s never stated explicitly, Ella and Governor Bill appear to be Democrats, especially given a signature program Ella pushes to help mothers in need. But if Brooks was trying to provide an antidote to the current real world politics, he doesn’t succeed, as Ella’s full goals are never clear. He also inexplicably shows her boring her fellow lawmakers to tears, a strange trait to give the person for whom the audience is supposed to be rooting.

What saves the movie from being an all-out train wreck is the performances of Mackey and Curtis. Mackey, best known for the Netflix show Sex Education, has an assured confidence to her that keeps the character interesting and likable even when the story goes downhill. Curtis, who has tended to go over-the-top with her roles in recent years, tones it down, offering a warm place of comfort for Ella to turn to when she needs it. The two complement each other very well and are the best parts of the movie by far.

Brooks puts much more effort into his female actors, including Kavner, who, even though she serves as an unnecessary narrator, gets most of the best laugh lines in the film. Harrelson is capable of playing a great cad, but his character here isn’t fleshed out enough. Fearn is super annoying in his role, and Lowden isn’t much better, although that could be mostly due to what his character is called to do. Were it not for the always-great Brooks and Nanjiani, the movie might be devoid of good male performances.

Brooks has made many great TV shows and movies in his 60+ year career, but Ella McCay is a far cry from his best. The only positive that comes out of it is the boosting of Mackey, who proves herself capable of not only leading a film, but also elevating one that would otherwise be a slog to get through.

    ---

Ella McCay opens in theaters on December 12.
