holidays on the rooftop
Houston's Rooftop Cinema Club reveals holiday lineup, themed nights, an Elf-tastic marathon, and more
Houston’s cooler temps means more fun outdoors, and for movie fans, that means the city’s favorite al fresco film headquarters. Rooftop Cinema Club Uptown, in preparation for the holiday season, has revealed its full lineup in what the company describes as the most anticipated ticket release of the year.
Movie fans can head to the rooftop in Uptown’s BLVD Place (1700 Post Oak Blvd.) for scenic city views and a venue decked out for the holidays, complete with wintery decor and seasonal drinks to cozy up for those fave films (Elf fans, read on).
As for those films, spectators can expect beloved holiday titles and the Rooftop’s signature, cleverly themed events like singalongs, zodiac sign nights, and new this year, a of ugly sweaters (yes!) and corny Christmas classics.
In keeping with tradition, the venue will also donate to the Houston Food Bank by matching all movie-goer’s donations at the end of December. Guests will be invited to add $1 to any of their December ticket purchases to support the initiative, to ensure a merry season for all.
Given those demanding schedules, Rooftop will add early matinee options every Saturday and Sunday in November and December, with four films each day starting as early as 11 am, (depending on the day), an early afternoon screening, and two sunset and late-night screenings.
Never ones to disappoint with clever, quirky, and even silly themes, Rooftop has unveiled perhaps the best themed nights yet. (Fear not: Wooftop dog-friendly screenings and beloved Singalong nights are back.) Here’s a preview of some of the besy nights and promotions.
Casablanca 80th Anniversary
Featuring one of cinema’s most famed lines, the movie that made “Here's looking at you, kid” a cultural phrase marks its 80th anniversary. Rooftop wittily reminds fans: “You must remember” (see what they did there?) to come to this special anniversary screening on November 6.
The Muppet Christmas Carol 30th Anniversary
The true gem of the Muppets comedy left when the beloved Jim Henson passed away, but his best movies endure. Such is the case with his moving and charming version of Charles Dickens’ classic (iconic Michael Caine as Scrooge is a must-see), which sets the standard for Dickens adaptations — puppets or otherwise.
Scorpio/Sagittarius/Capricorn Season
Keeping its tradition centered on celebrating zodiac signs, the cinema shouts out Scorpio Season (October 23-November 22), Sagittarius season (November 23-December 21), and Capricorn season (December 22–January 19) with movies made by or starring cinematic Scorpios, Sagittari, and Capricorns.
People’s Choice: DysFUNctional Family
In a theme that hits home to many, the November event asks fans to choose which dysfunctional movie family to screen. Fans can vote for favorite flawed, but lovable, faves here! Voting closes October 27; the winning film will be announced October 28.
Home Alone Double Bill
Look for two rounds of Kevin McCallister vs. The Wet Bandits with a double bill of Home Alone and the NYC-set sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which marks its 30th anniversary this year!
Corny Christmas Classics
These include those tried-and-true romantic comedies doused with snowfall and chilly kisses, major melodramas, and schmaltzy family classics. Get corny from December 10-11.
National Ugly Sweater Day
Understanding that ugly sweaters are a thing, the venue weaves a fun event on December 16. Expect a double-dose of apropos comedies: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and The Night Before and be sure to don that ugliest sweater for a pre-screening contest. May the worst sweater win.
Elf-A-Thon
Who knew National Christmas Movie Marathon Day was a thing? Apparently December 23 marks the day, and the venue will fittingly run Will Farrell’s legendary holiday treat Elf all day long. The fun with Buddy and his…interesting breakfasts and landmark belches start at 11 am. Naturally, fans are encouraged to dress as Buddy the Elf; the top elves win prizes.
Tickets range from $17.50 to $25.25; prices depend on the day and choice of double a Adirondack LoveSeat, a single Adirondack, or Lounge Seat with or without popcorn.
Food and snacks are plentiful on-site, with beer, wine, and canned cocktails available for sale. In a nod to busy parents whose kiddos may have specific diets, guests can bring outside food (no outside drinks are permitted).
