Sunday, January 22 marks the Year of the Rabbit on the Chinese calendar, marking a season of good fortune for those under the rabbit sign, as well as ox, tigers, and snakes. Viet Nam, meanwhile, marks January 22 as the year of the cat, celebrating love, the start of spring, and a hopeful new year.
Here in Houston — the most diverse city in the nation — events across town toast the two lunar observances with parties, performances, restaurant specials, and more. Look for free family fun, cultural journeys, and more.
From anime to shopping, these are your best bets to ring in the new years of rabbit and cat in Houston.
All weekend
Mala SIchuan Bistrowill have Chinese New Year celebrations at all five locations. In Sugar Land, it’ll be on Friday at 5 pm. On Saturday, the parties at Katy and Chinatown will start, respectively, at 1:45 and 5:15 pm. And, on Sunday, the Heights and Montrose parties start at 2 and 5:30 pm.
Karbach Brewing Co. will host the Otaku Lunar New Year Food Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Along with the usual LNY festivities, there will also be fabulous food – and anime! Noon.
Railway Heights Market and Asian Night Market will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit on Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy great Asian street food, desserts, drinks, pop-up shops, live music, a lion dance performance, and so much more. Noon.
Saturday
Children’s Museum Houston will have its annual Lunar New Year bash, featuring lion dancers, exciting activities, and live performances celebrating Houston’s Asian diversity. 10 am.
The Chinese Community Center will celebrate by showcasing dragon and lion dances, as well as bringing in artists, businesses, food vendors, games, and cultural performances. 10 am.
Dinette will have the TCT Lion Dance Team performing at 3 pm. There will also be all-day happy hour food and drinks, pho nachos, and an $88 dinner special. 11 am.
M-K-Tand Houston Plant Market will salute the new year with an outdoor market with over 40 local growers and artisans. Come get lucky with free red envelopes, lion dancers, and a drum show. Noon.
Kin Deewill host an enchanting lion dance performance produced by Lee’s Golden Dragon Lion & Dragon Dance Association. Reservations are required. 7:30 pm.
Sunday
Discovery Green is hosting a celebration in connection with winter art installation Solstice, by Studio Iregular. The event will feature performances by Dance of Asian America and more. Food vendors and additional activities for the whole family will be available. 5 pm.
Phat Eatery will have its fifth annual celebration, featuring a special menu to ring in a new year of happiness and prosperity. There will also be a special lion-awakening ceremony. 6 pm.

Asia Society Texas toasts Lunar New Year for all with its annual, free family festival on Saturday, January 28. Visitors can expect performances, art and craft activities, and food that pays homage to the diverse Lunar New Year traditions across the Asian continent. Kids can look forward to Chinese calligraphy, rabbit hat crafts and Lunar New Year zodiac games, and a photo booth with costumed Peking Opera performers. More fun comes wth interactive story times and vibrant events like lion dancing. Don't miss music and dance performances by the esteemed Huaxing Arts Group all day.
