Totally awesome new Lego exhibit builds a massive block party downtown

    Steven Devadanam
    Oct 25, 2022 | 4:50 pm

Whether a source of inspiration and creativity for little kids, or a source of nostalgia or pain (when stepping on sharp-cornered pieces) for big kids, Legos are an inherent part of the American experience.

Now, Houstonians of all ages can build on the joy of that experience with a veritable block party headed downtown. Awesome Exhibition – The Interactive Exhibition of LEGO Models created by LEGO Certified Professional Ryan “The Brickman” McNaught (whew) opens to the public on Saturday, October 29 at the George R. Brown Convention Center (1001 Avenida De Las Americas).

This is the first time the colorful (and very long-titled) show comes to Houston. Tickets for the vivid event are available now online.

Visitors can expect more than 30 displays — created solely by Lego bricks — in four themed rooms with immersive sound components meant to elevate the experience. Iconic global vistas will be completely recreated, replicas include Windsor Castle, Sydney Opera House, the Space Needle, and more. Things get wild with a kangaroo, platypus, a family of penguins, and more from the animal kingdom.

For some pop culture, an exhibit dubbed Let’s Go to the Movies! will showcase a version of the unforgettable 1981 Delorean time machine of Back to the Future, The Simpsons TV with the signature living room on screen, and various movie posters of classics including E.T, Star Trek, and Star Wars.

For a some adventure, The Danger Zone will house a replica of the first submersible to reach the deepest place in the ocean, the Trieste Bathyscaphe; the largest truck in the world, the Caterpillar 797 Mining Truck; and powerful wild animals like an orca, crocodile, and redback spider.

For a perfect fit, Brick by Brick will display a giant LEGO brick and LEGO snake wall allowing creative types to highlight their own creations.

As immersive journeys and passports are all the rage, each guest will receive a passport that is stamped in each room as a commemorative gift.

Fans can see how the fun stacks up through December 30. For more information, visit the official website.

Avenida Houston will host Juneteenth events on June

Next weekend, Miller Outdoor Theatre and Avenida Houston/Discovery Green will join forces to celebrate freedom, culture and community (and don’t forget blackness!) at Juneteenth Culture Fest 2025.

Presented by Houston First Corporation in partnership with KTSU 90.9FM, Juneteenth Culture Fest 2025 will commemorate the cultural and historical significance of Juneteenth and freedom through music, art, dance, food and Black-owned businesses. Everyone is encouraged to come and be inspired and entertained, while paying tribute to African American culture and remembering the ending of slavery in the United States.

Things start over at Miller Outdoor Theatre, on Friday, June 13 at 8:30 pm. The evening’s centerpiece will be a heartfelt musical tribute to dearly-departed legends like Roberta Flack, Angie Stone, Luther Vandross, Johnnie Taylor, Maze frontman Frankie Beverly and Tony! Toni! Tone! guitarist/vocalist D’Wayne Wiggins. There will also be performances by the Ernest Walker Band, LeToya Luckett, Madicin, Jenni P, and Ruben Studdard.

The party will continue at Avenida Houston and Discovery Green on Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, both starting at 4 pm. The festivities will feature multiple genres of live music, top DJs, dance, and art. More than 100 BLCK Market vendors will also be around, including artists and designers offering handmade goods, cultural merchandise, art, fashion and crafts. The event also includes community conversations, live podcasts, food trucks, and more. Sunday will include a special Father’s Day edition of performances.
