ready, dodgeball!
Reagan Bregman, NFL legends, and other stars face off in Houston's most baller celebrity dodgeball challenge
A very wise man once said, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.” Now locals will see if some beloved celebs can pput that old adage to the test.
The third annual Ultimate Most Dopest Dodgeball Charity Challenge returns on Saturday, June 24 at EaDo beer garden and party palace Pitch 25. The event — always a raucous tourney full of good-natured smack talk and mad skills, is hosted by Pitch 25 owner and Houston Dynamo/MLS star Brian Ching, runs from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Ticket sales go towards each celeb's selected charity; admission is just $20, available online.
Entrepreneur, philanthropist, TV and social media star, and CultureMap columnist Reagan Bregman will captain a team playing for the charity she runs with husband Alex, Bregman Cares, which raises funds for those in need and assisting families who have children with autism.
When asked if she's seen the legendary movie Dodgeball, our lifestyle columnist notes that it's more than entertainment. "I plan to have my team watch clips from the movie to prepare," she tells CultureMap. (A winning strategy for sure, Reagan.)
Other celebrities include former Houston Texan and Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs’ Justin Reid (winner of the inaugural tourney), playing for his JReid Indeed foundation that helps disadvantaged youth and communities through interactive programs, community engagement, and technology access
Current champ and original Texan Chester Pitts will play for Carson Parke; the foundation provides long-term residential treatment to girls, ages 12 to 17, with serious to severe emotional and behavioral problems from all backgrounds.
Known for arguably the best hands in the NFL, former Texan and current NFL free agent wide receiver will DeAndre Hopkins rep the foundation founded his mother Sabrina Greenlee, Smoooth INC., The nonprofit empowers, educates, and equips survivors of domestic violence.
With this level of talent, fans can expect some serious skills, quick-twitch response, and swagger on display. Even more pro athletes have signed on for each team of 10 to play for the trophy and have recruited their celebrity friends and charity patrons. They include Houston Texans’ Eric Murray, Tavierre Thomas, Garrett Wallow, and NFL veteran Eric Reid representing Team J Reid. Texans Ring of Honor icon and NFL Legend Andre Johnson and Cecil Shorts III will line up alongside former teammate Texan Pitts. Texas college football and NFL veteran Adrian Peterson, Cincinnati Bengals DJ Reader, Houston Texans’ Tank Dell and fitness guru Crystal Walls will throw balls for Team Bregman. Actor and comedian Jeff Shelley will mix it up for Team Hop.
Celeb teams are underwritten by local Houston companies Superior Plumbing Solutions (supporting Team CPII/Carson Parke), Think Neurology (supporting Team Bregman), Houston Mambas (supporting Team Hop) and EMF (supporting Team J.Reid). Sponsorship opportunities are still available.
While she's lining off against NFL legends with insane speed, agility, power, and hands, don't sleep on our lifestyle columnist as a dark horse fave. “I remember playing as a kid and that’s when I started to learn how competitive I am," Bregman tells us. “I think I’ve been underestimated in this competition, so I’m ready to go out there and win!”
