Bun B lassos hip hop superstar Drake as final guest at Rodeo takeover
It appears that a certified lover boy will be joining Bun B for his All-American Takeover show at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Tuesday, March 12.
Early Friday morning, Bun announced on his Instagram that Canadian rap superstar Drake will be performing at the latest installment in the Houston hip-hop legend’s Takeover concerts, which he started doing at the Rodeo two years ago.
Bun posted a photo of Drake’s famed owl logo from his October’s Very Own (OVO) record label/brand wearing a cowboy hat with the logo of Underground Kingz (UGK), Bun’s former rap group he formed with the late Pimp C. The pic is accompanied with the caption “IF YOURE READING THIS ITS TOO LATE, a nod to Drake’s 2015 mixtape.
The announcement was greeted with both excitement and criticism from people in the comments section. Some posted the infamous gif of rapper Soulja Boy contemptuously saying Drake’s name on The Breakfast Club, while others would’ve preferred if Houston rap queen Megan Thee Stallion, whom Drake allegedly dissed on his Her Loss album, was added to the lineup.
On some level, the announcement isn't a total surprise. Drake praised Bun B when he visited Trill Burgers last year. “I don't like to use the term OG. This is my mentor; one of my mentors. One of my favorite people," he said.
Drake is one of several major artists who’ll be joining Bun for this show. Nelly, Rick Ross, Eve, and That Mexican OT are also scheduled to appear. The overwhelming collection of star power has fueled speculation that Bun and his friends are aiming to claim the Rodeo’s all-time attendance record from Los Tigres Del Norte.
"People don't realize how big of a deal the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo concert series is. It's very quietly one of the largest music festivals in the world," Bun B said on CultureMap news partner ABC13 earlier this week. "It's 21 days of concerts in a football stadium averaging 60,000-plus people per night. My night is no different. So I wanted to bring an amazing amount of talent representation."
A very limited number of tickets are available here.
