Rockin' BowiElvis Fest returns to iconic Houston club to celebrate 2 music icons
David Bowie and Elvis Presley never shared a stage together — nor would they likely have ... ever. That means the world was robbed of potential collabs like “Heartbreak Spaceship” or “Let’s Karate.”
But the two late, great icons of music do share a birthday. Locally, that means it’s time once again for the annual BowiElvis Fest, this year marking its 14th year and taking place at the iconic Continental Club in Midtown.
Produced by local Houston independent label Splice Records, the music-and-art-fueled event celebrates the sonic and cultural impact of The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Man Who Swiveled His Pelvis. Continuous music on two different stages will feature bands and performers showcasing some the duo’s best-loved tunes, as well as their own original material.
Those acts include headliners and local/regional favorites Pecos Hank, Nick Gaitan, and Luba Dvorak & The Brooklyn Twang. Other acts treading the boards will include Shame on Me, Oh Hooray, Elise Morrison, Catherine Stroud, and Houston’s A.S.S.
Special guests include Houston burlesque troupe Dem Damn Dames, along with MC Mills-McCoin and DJ Boogie Soul.
Costumes — be they inspired by the otherworldly outfit of Ziggy Stardust or the prison garb of Jailhouse Rock (or any creative combination) are encouraged for attendees. Local artists will showcase and demonstrate their craft alongside face painters.
Keeping right in with the day’s theme, the spotlight food item for culinary craving is “The King” — Presley’s real-life go-to fave of a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich.
In an ominous turn, Bowie's last album, Blackstar, is a knowing nod to The King's song "Black Star." Elvis' upbeat country song notes that when a man sees his black star, he knows his time has come. A haunting reminder that Bowie clearly knew his time was coming when he released his magnum opus.
Houston's BowiElvis show actually takes place the day before the blessed birthday events of January 8. But that will just give both space cadets and hunks of burnin' love an extra day to celebrate life, music, and indisputable style of the two Rock and Roll Hall of Famers.
