Avenida Houston toasts AAPI Heritage Month with fire dancers, concerts, and Asian Elvis
From hula to karaoke and more, the first three Saturdays in May hit a high note during AAPI Amplified.
The free cultural celebration at Avenida Houston is your all-access pass to experiencing the city’s vibrant Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.
It’s all happening in honor of AAPI Heritage Month, and the extravaganza of traditional and contemporary dance, music performances, and art is something you don’t want to miss.
Here’s what to expect during this tour of Asian culture and destinations.
May 6
Kick off the month with some hip-shaking fun and experience the Pacific Islands by way of Malia’s Hula Hut. They have an eclectic range of music, dancing, and fire performances in store.
May 13
Maxim, one of Houston’s leading bands, will have you on your feet with their creative mix of traditional Vietnamese music and American pop favorites.
You can also see traditional Thai cultural performances presented by the Wat Buddhavas Temple on Avenida’s main stage, and a contemporary art exhibition of colorful, stunning pieces by local Asian American artists on the Wharf.
May 20
Asian Elvis is in the house at the grand finale of AAPI Amplified. Tribute artist John Newinn, also known as Johnny Elvis, is hosting the ultimate karaoke night — because no Asian celebration is complete without a sing-along.
