Propaganda with your popcorn?
Happy Feet 2 is tanking and getting people talking over alleged liberal agenda
"Do you want a side of propaganda with your popcorn?" That's what conservatives allege Hollywood is including in children's movies lately.
Critics are paying particular attention to Happy Feet 2, which is tanking at the box office (compared to its predecessor) — as a result, they argue, of its progressive themes.
“Films geared toward children contain left-leaning perspectives on the environment, big business and morality,” Stephen Winzenburg, professor of communications at Iowa's Grand View College, tells the Hollywood Reporter. “Tolerance of others is taught as the highest form of morality, while absolute right and wrong is ignored.”
I guess if by "left leaning" you mean messages of compassion and selflessness, sure. But isn't tolerance and acceptance something we all try to teach our children, regardless of political stance?
I figure if people are up in arms over a couple of penguins, here are some other movies of our childhoods that should've got the GOP yapping:
Anastasia — This 1997 cartoon cast the Russian monarchy as a family of unwitting sweethearts who were undone by a mean magician with a loose eye socket.
Beauty and the Beast — This one has the holy, wooly trifecta: A scientist father, an academic daughter and a non-traditional marriage.
Mulan — Feminism at its finest: The heroine throws off traditional gender mores and defies her family.
Antz — What's more collectivist than an ant hill? And with a lady queen, no less!
Alice in Wonderland — Drugs. Sooo many drugs.
