Classical Coup
Move over, Beyoncé: Houston's Ars Lyrica surprised by Grammy nod
Houstonians are no stranger to the Grammy Awards. After all, hometown diva Beyoncé picked up six last year, a record for a female artist.
But in a crowded classical music field dominated by prestigious coastal companies and international performers, a Houston group is making waves — and it's not who you think.
Ars Lyrica, a vocal and instrumental ensemble that performs works from the Baroque and early Classical eras on period instruments, received a coveted 2011 Grammy nomination in the opera category for their world premiere recording of "Marc Antonio e Cleopatra" by Johann Adolf Hasse.
Ars Lyrica is not only the only Houston group to receive a nod (sorry, HGO) but are also the only American performers in the category.
"It's a total surprise. I had no idea we were even under serious consideration," said artistic director Matthew Dirst. "It's great. I was surprised also that we ended up in the opera category — technically it's a serenata, but I guess the Grammys don't have a category for that."
Dirst said he got the news via a late-night text from soprano Ava Pine, one of the principal singers on the recording along with mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton.
Ars Lyrica first performed Hasse's "Marc Antonio e Cleopatra," at their annual New Year's Eve concert in 2009 and made the recording in the same week. Dirst credits both the importance and rarity of the work and the quality of the performance for all the national attention.
"The composer, Hasse, is a great master, but largely overshadowed by Bach and Vivaldi," he said. "There's a bit of a Hasse revival going on now, and this was his first important work, dating to 1725. Part of it is a matter of a historically important piece, especially since this was the first recording of it, it was only published four to five years ago. Secondly the two singers featured, up-and-coming opera singers, give truly great performances."
The Grammy winners will be announced on February 13, 2011. Dirst and the Ars Lyrica group are nominated against the British Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Russian Orchestra and Chorus of the Mariinsky Theatre, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
