Skating on thin ice
The Ice at Discovery Green is cool, and eco-conscious, too
UPDATE: The Ice at Discovery Green is open to skaters through Jan. 18. So take advantage of the cold winter weather and pretend you're in Minnesota.
The Ice at Discovery Green is back this year, bringing a rare foreign substance (ice!) and beloved holiday pastime to thousands of sweltering Houstonians.
The skating rink, which is about the size of basketball court, is fueled by 100 percent renewable energy, thanks to a contract with Green Mountain Energy and 256 solar panels. It opened Thanksgiving Day and will be available to curious Houstonians through Jan. 18.
Discovery Green has weekly programming for The Ice that includes performances by professional skaters, DJ and movie nights and skating with Santa Claus.
Look for a snow day Dec. 12, with truckloads of the stuff to be brought in and enjoyed for, well, as long as it lasts.
