That destination venue up in TW (The Woodlands, duh) is making headlines. According to Pollstar magazine, the concert industry's top dog publication, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion ranks second among the top 100 amphitheaters in the world.
The stats are based on the number of tickets sold through the third quarter of 2010, when the venue reeled in six sold-out concerts: Buzzfest XXIV, Jimmy Buffett, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Rush.
"We have had an incredible year so far, including an extremely busy month in September," Pavilion president and CEO Jerry MacDonald told Woodlands Online.
Macdonald adds, "The quality and variety of shows we have presented has been fantastic. I attribute the high ranking to a relatively strong Houston market and our booking partnership with Live Nation. The Pavilion is a great way to experience concerts and our location is one of the keys to our success."
Ticket sales totaled 307,489 for shows played between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, 2010. Pavilion reps credit the success to the fan experience.
But no venue came close to 397,265 tickets sold during the same period by The Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, the No. 1 amphitheater in the world. The Filene Center is located in Vienna, Va, a suburb of Washington D.C. that's 16 miles outside of the city.
