Don't Miss List
Idina Menzel & a Vengeful Redhead are on TUTS CEO John Breckenridge's "must-see" list
Editors Note: We've asked Houston arts leaders and CultureMap contributors to pick the jewels from Houston's upcoming arts season — the events that they don't plan to miss. Here are Theatre Under the Stars CEO John Breckenridge's favorites:
Looking forward to this fall’s arts offerings, the selections are far and wide; yet, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Theatre Under The Stars season opener, Guys and Dolls, as one of the not-to-miss performances of the season. (It runs Sept. 27-Oct. 9 at the Hobby Center.) A golden age swing era musical comedy, the show features all new scenery, grandiose costumes and some of Broadway’s most familiar songs.
Speaking of musical theatre, I’m very much looking forward to Idina Menzel’s performance as part of the Houston Symphony’s lineup this fall. Menzel has been a long-time musical theatre standout and she’ll be singing some of her memorable songs from blockbuster hits Rent and Wicked as well as performing some pieces from her album, I Stand — all with the supremely talented Houston Symphony as her backdrop. (Oct 14-16 at Jones Hall.)
Another treat I’m eager to take in is Society for the Performing Arts’ presentation of Complexions Contemporary Ballet (Oct. 14, Wortham Theater Center.) Complexions’ artistic directors Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden have introduced the world to riveting displays of ballet and dance, and anyone who has seen a Complexions performance knows that the dance company brings an exquisite, modern feel to the art form.
Also on my “must-see” list is Stages Repertory Theatre’s presentation of The Blonde, The Brunette and The Vengeful Redhead (Oct. 5-30, Stages). I expect Stages to deliver Houstonians a memorable performance of this blend of mystery, comedy, and heart-rending drama. This one-woman show features Susan O. Koozin, who is no stranger to playing several characters in a show.
TUTS audience members will remember her most recently from our 2010 production of Hairspray in her three-character portrayal of Prudy Pingleton, the gym teacher and the matron.
As a final thought, no season would be complete without a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In looking at the museum’s spectacular schedule of attractions, as a fan of modern art, I’m especially excited to visit the Spirit of Modernism exhibit. Modern art always brings a flare for the dramatic, so it’s no surprise to me that art as small as a photograph to as large as a gilded bronze sculpture measuring over 10 feet high will be on display.
