Still Fabulous Thunderbirds?
Whatever happened to ... there's a Sam Houston Race Park concert for that
Ever hear a long-forgotten one-hit wonder on the radio and ask yourself, "What ever happened to ... (insert the name of similarly forgotten, obscure singer or band here)?"
The answer to that question, in almost every case, is "They're booked to play a gig at Sam Houston Race Park."
In addition to establishing itself as a place for horse racing, beer-drinking and college-fund betting joy, Sam Houston Race Park has also become the concert venue of choice for long-dead pop and rock careers to rise from the grave for one last nostalgic shot of amplified glory.
In recent years I have seen A Flock of Seagulls, Dramarama, When in Rome and Foghat all at the race park.
No, those aren't the names of horses who ran against each other in the featured stakes race. Those are names of bands that I grew up loving because they had at least one (but no more than three) marginally popular songs on the radio 20 to 40 years ago.
This Saturday's 107.5 The Eagle Rock & Races Day brings together another unlikely trio of past juke box heroes: Loverboy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Scandal.
For the dozens of you who are die-hard fans of these VH1 vanguards, well, there isn't a lot I can tell you that you probably don't already have posted on your Facebook page next to pictures of your parakeet and your best friend, Nana.
For the rest of you, I can sum up all you need to know to sell you on this line-up by offering merely a song title or brief song lyric snippet per band.
Loverboy: "Working for the Weekend"
The Fabulous Thunderbirds: "Tuff Enuff"
Scandal: "Shootin' at the walls of heartache, BANG! BANG! I am the warrior."
If these clues read like Navajo to you, then this show is probably not for you.
If, however, you felt a rush of nostalgia and the sudden need to bust out those red leather pants and oversized sweaters and sweatshirts from the back of the closet, then this is your chance to get your '80s on one last time ... or at least until the next concert at Sam Houston Race Park.
Loverboy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds & Scandal, 8:15 p.m. Saturday at Sam Houston Race Park
