Recognition Opportunities
The name game: Houston Ballet's new Center of Dance is a who's who of artssupporters
When Houston Ballet moves from its scruffy home on West Gray next spring, the company will be ensconced in a majestic monument to dance — and to those who support it.
The new, six-story Center for Dance at Smith and Preston will have almost as many names in it as the Katy telephone directory. And that's a good thing. For with every name on a viewing area or a hall or a vestibule, there is money in the bank for Houston Ballet.
Don't call them "naming rights." The tax man has nixed that nicety. We are now talking about "recognition opportunities," ways for a non-profit to say thank-you for a patron's generosity.
On a recent tour with Houston Ballet managing director C.C. Conner, it seemed that just about every nameable piece of the building had been spoken for by a high-profile Houstonian. But with 115,000 square feet, there remains ample space for saluting donors.
Consider, for example, the Phoebe and Bobby Tudor Vestibule, the Melza and Ted Barr Academy Studio and the Bob and Cindi Blakely Bridge Entry II. The Bridge Entry I has been named for the Neil and Carol Kelley Family Foundation. That would be the bridge that connects the new ballet home to Wortham Theater Center where performances are held.
Patricia McCracken, Houston Ballet campaign coordinator, maintains the listing of those recognized for their generosity. Gifts that earn such merit begin at $75,000 and go up from there. Those giving opportunities remain. "Yes, we have studios, offices and other exciting spaces for new donors," she e-mailed.
Margaret Alkek Williams is beaming over the fact that the ballet has named its Dance Lab in her honor, thanks to generous donations from the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation. The beauty of that space is particularly exciting for Conner as well as for ballet patrons. In addition to its role as 200-seat black box theater, the space can hold 300 for a seated dinner. The adjacent open hall serves as a handy reception area for any activity that might be taking place within.
Once the final touches are completed, Lynn Wyatt's name will grace the Music Director's Office. Karen J. Harnett and Kris and Richard McGee will find their names on Academy Studio Viewing Areas. Look for Leticia Loya's name on the Company Viewing Area and the late Carol E. Tag's name on the Director of Individual Giving/Events Office. Mica and the late Bob Mosbacher will have the Music Practice Room named in their honor.
