Who's surprised by reality TV lies?
The Bachelorette pulls Jake & Vienna back in for a throwdown: You thought thewrestler was good TV?
The big buzz in reality TV this week is that tonight's episode of The Bachelorette brings Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi back together for a sit-down interview with host Chris Harrison. They want to set the record straight of course.
Instead, Vienna ends up calling Jake "a fame whore," Jake brands her a cheat and there are tears and storm outs all around.
In other words, new week, same ratings strategy.
Last week's Bachelorette had wrestler Justin "Rated R" Rego wrestling with his lies. His girlfriend from Toronto, Jessica Spillas, and a former Bachelor contestant (now friend with Ali), Jessie Sulidis, call Ali while she is in Turkey to break the news. Not only was Justin playing around with Ali, his girlfriend Spillas says she found out that Justin was even unfaithful before going to the show.
What a scumbag! Who else besides every single contestant on the first night would ever imagine Justin "wasn't there for the right reasons?"
Spillas, the girlfriend, tells Ali, "Basically, me and Justin have been dating for the past almost two years now. A couple months ago, he said, 'I'm going on the show, but it's solely for the purpose of getting my foot into the door of the entertainment industry,' his wrestling career. He assured me that when he came back we would be together and start our plans to get married. I believed him."
To make matters worse, Justin made phone calls and left messages for Spillas during dates with Ali.
Of course, this type of scripted trash TV brought in an 15-percent increase of the coveted 18-49-year-old viewers. About 8.1 million people stayed for the juicy episode of The Bachelorette. A number that should be easily eclipsed again by the Jake and Vienna throwdown tonight.
Recently, Entertainment Tonight Canada interviewed Justin who says “No more reality TV,” adding that he “definitely” does not want to be the next Bachelor. “This has been such a rough experience, like it’s kind of scared me away from doing anything. It’s not fun having you’re name dragged through the mud.” He also says that he is no longer with Spillas because she saw her true nature as a person.
If you are a person doing something dishonest, shouldn't you get dragged through the mud? Then again, are there really any honest people on reality TV?
Contestants on reality TV tend to occupy the bottom rung of the morality bar. That's why they're good reality TV characters.
This twist reminds me of Jonny "Fairplay" from Survivor who lied about his grandmother dying to win a challenge. As hard as that was to swallow that someone could manufacture the death of a loved one, it is still remembered to this day as something that kind of fits the criteria for casting. Crazy, different, and (for The Bachelorette) douchey makes it easier for you to make it on TV.
And in Jake and Vienna's case, it keeps getting you asked back.
