It’s that time of year to prepare for Houston’s favorite quirky tradition, the 22nd Annual Houston Art Car Parade. Here’s a run-down of the where and when:
Friday, May 8
Check out the newest art cars without the sunburn at Discovery Green at 7 pm, with live music and art car films playing to boot, all for free.
Saturday, May 9
The art cars will begin lining up around 9 am on Allen Parkway west of Taft St. The parade officially kicks off at 1 pm, with over 250 fabulously weird cars crawling from Taft east to Bagby and then back. The best parking bet is in the vast garage network underneath the theater district. Aside from potential parking costs, the festivities are free to all.
For those willing to cough up some green for a great view, drinks, and a spot in the shade, the VIPit Partyis where to be. For $125, all of which goes to support this arty Houston classic, you get all of the above, plus activities for the kids and snacks from local restaurants. VIPit runs from 11 am to 3 pm at The Heritage Society at 1100 Bagby.
Sunday, May 10
Art car artists, friends and aficionados gather the The Orange Show for Visionary Art (the enterprising organization that thought up Art Car) from 11 am to 2 pm for the art car awards ceremony and brunch, along with drinks and live music. The tariff? $0.
