The video for Beyoncé's latest single, "Run the World (Girls)" dropped Wednesday night, and among the many costume changes and trademark choreography, Beyoncé emerges as perhaps an even badder b*tch than she was before.
Houston gets an early shout-out in the video, in which Beyoncé, dressed in various sexified warrior garb, leads an army of women in a dance battle royale against a group of rather bewildered-looking male soldiers. It's not the first time Bey has played the fierce femme fatale, but given the soft, hyper-femininity of some of her other productions ("Halo," Destiny's Child's "Cater 2 U,") it was a welcome shock to see her flip the bird and blow up a car.
It's also, for my money, some of the strongest and most advanced choreography we've seen from Bey. In a video industry full of quick cuts, product bombs and cheap visual distractions, it's refreshing to see an extended, challenging dance number from start to finish.
With lyrics like "Come here baby, hope you still like me if you pay me" and "Boy you know you love it how we're smart enough to make the millions/ Strong enough to bear the children then get back to business," this is a girl-power anthem that, given Beyoncé's personal earning power and scope of influence, has actual resonance.
