The Island reduced
The Lost deaths begin: With three down, who's next ...
If you didn't watch last night’s episode of Lost and like to be surprised (or the last to know ... yeah, this wasn't the week to choose Glee), this is not the article for you. If you are with it, or are one of the millions of embittered ex-Lost fans who gave up cause you weren’t getting your answers, then read on.
We’re in the last season and nearing the last episodes — I knew my favorite characters would start dying, I just didn’t expect three of them to go in a two-minute timeframe. Last night, Sayid, and both Kwons died and I’m disappointed.
The Kwons were just reunited. They’ve had basically a day together and are now floating at the bottom of the ocean in a submarine. I think the writers were going for tragic romance (Jin could have saved himself but stayed with the trapped Sun) but unfortunately it came off as a desperate attempt to quickly kill unnecessary characters. It reminded me of a five-second Titanic, which is only OK on YouTube (see video below).
Let’s be realistic for a moment (I know. Realism with Lost. What am I thinking?). Sun could have made Jin leave by insisting he raise their daughter. I return to my “eliminate inconvenient characters” theory. Sun and Jin were baggage the writers didn't want to deal with.
With regards to Sayid, I’m completely fine with the elimination. Sayid’s been crazy this season and I'm tired of wondering what happened to his voice.
I did find it strange that the only Middle Eastern character died by suicide bombing. Granted, he was saving others lives, but does the former interrogator for the Iraqi Republican Guard have to die that way? Was there really no other way to off him?
Truth be told, even though he was holding the C-4 when it exploded, he may return. I’m guessing not since it’s character-elimination time, but he's come back to life once. It is Lost. It could happen again.
With the remaining characters, I feel pretty secure in their permanence, except Claire. I imagine either Faux Locke kills her or she gives her life to save Kate (possibly both?).
Hurley will somehow save the day, and there’s no way they kill off Jack, Sawyer or Kate until at least the last episode. Desmond will be there until the end, though I expect a serious confrontation between him and Charles Widmore.
Lost is becoming a little exhausting, but if you’ve made it this far, hang in there — you’re almost done and need these last details to rule in Lost Trivial Pursuit for years to come.
