Create your own refund with tax day freebies

    • Wines: Cork Wine Bar's announcement of "heavily discounted" wines on sale today
    • Dinner: McCormick & Schmick's is offering a special $10.40 dinner and drinkspecial in the bar today.

    • Fast-foods: Get one free Southern-style chicken biscuit or chicken sandwich atMcDonald's.

No one likes opening their pocketbook to Uncle Sam, but whether you had to write a check or are expecting one in the mail you can take advantage of a little tax day relief around town with these deals.

But like the IRS, when it comes to these deals, move fast, because April 16 will be too late.

    - All P.F. Chang's locations are offering 15 percent off all dine-in and delivery meals, minus happy hour specials and alcohol.

    - McCormick & Schmick's will have $10.40 entrees and drinks on offer all day for bar patrons. Or if you are busy filling returns for other people, show up tomorrow with your CPA business card and get the same deal.

    - Forget tax day, Friday is Fryday at all Jack in the Box locations, with a free small order of their new fries for any customer — no purchase required.

    - While not technically to do with taxes, the McDonald's of Gleannlock Farms (that's the one at 8718 Spring Cypress Road, in Spring) is offering 1955 prices on hamburgers, cheeseburgers and milkshakes to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the first McDonalds. That means a hamburger is 55 cents, a cheeseburger is $0.65, and a milkshake is $1. Talk about retro-awesome!

    - Get free sample's of new desserts at Maggie Moo's and Cinnabon. Maggie Moo's will give out slices of their ice cream pizza and Cinnabon is handing out two of their mini cupcake bites.

-Today only, the Houston Dynamo are offering $10.40 seats to their game against Chivas USA that takes place this Saturday at 3 p.m.

    - Anvil Bar & Refuge is offering "Tax Relief" by holding the tax on any drink from 5-9 p.m. (that's like a 14% discount), plus offering a half-dozen tax day special drinks for $6.

    - Get a free meal at Boston Market with the purchase of another meal of equal of greater value. You'll need this coupon.

    - Dieters, beware! Get a free cookie with the purchase of a meal at any Subway.

    - T.G.I. Friday's will give a $5 gift card for purchases between $15-25, and a $10 gift card for purchases of more than $25. (At participating locations.)

    - Pay for a meal at the Chick-Fil-A location in Pearland, save your receipt, and if you return by April 29, you can get the same meal for free. (Only at the Pearland location.)

    - Celebrate at Sambuca, where happy hour deals will run all day.

    - Crú Wine Bar in The Woodlands is offering 50 percent off of all entrees and sharing plates if you mention "Tax Credit" to your waiter.

    - Ziggy's Bar & Grill is offering $3 "specialtinis" — Montropolitans, Pomegranate Martinis, Passionpolitans, and Kissables — all day.

    - Also offering an all-day happy hour deal: Rainbow Lodge, with half-price glasses of wine.

    - SuzyBeez Cakez & Sweetz is offering 8.25 percent off all orders. Remember to ask for the Tax Day special.

Stars from Halo and Rick & Morty port into Houston for Comicpalooza 2026

Guests gather for a panel at Comicpalooza

Houston's largest comic and fan convention, Comicpalooza, has started announcing its celebrity guest line-up for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend event, including cast members from the Halo game franchise and animated sci-fi show Rick & Morty

In honor of the video game franchise's 25th Anniversary, Comicpalooza is welcoming Halo voice actors Steve Downes (Master Chief), Tim Dadabo (343 Guilty Spark), Jeff Steitzer (Voice of God multiplayer announcer), and Jen Taylor (Cortana). They will be joined by series composer Marty O’Donnell. Fans can expect several panels involving the cast as they discuss the game's long history as an iconic first-person shooter.

The more comedic side of science fiction is also warmly represented. Cast members from cult hit show Rick & Morty were announced earlier in February. Harry Belden (Morty), Ian Cardoni (Rick), and Spencer Grammer (Summer) will be signing autographs and meeting fans of the Adult Swim breakout time-and-space travel series. Attendees should refrain from constantly screaming "Pickle Rick" throughout the weekend (please).

Other guests include renowned comic writer Gail Simone (currently helming the incredible run of Uncanny X-Men), legendary genre film star Pam Grier (Foxy Brown, Jackie Brown), Dungeon Crawler Carl author Matt Dinniman, and the original Incredible Hulk actor, Lou Ferrigno. More guests are expected to be announced in the coming months, and Comicpalooza usually saves at least one big reveal until April.

Comicpalooza started from humble beginnings. In 2008, it was a small fan gathering celebrating the release of The Dark Knight in the lobby of the now-closed Alamo Drafthouse. Since then, it has grown into Houston's third-largest annual event after the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Houston Pride. Now operated by Houston First, the local government corporate that markets Houston as a travel and business destination, it's become a premiere tourist draw for the city. Roughly 50,000 people attend the convention every year.

The three-day fan event takes up most of the massive George R. Brown Convention Center with artists, vendors, panels, concerts, wrestling, craft activities, cosplay contests, gaming, and more. A full weekend pass for an adult costs $105, plus add-ons such as photo opportunities or autographs with the celebrity guests.Weekend passes for children under 12 are $10. Single day passes are also available. Tickets and more information can be found on the official Comicpalooza website.
