Titanic Tool: Blame James Cameron for rising movie ticket prices
Movie tickets are on the rise, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, and it's because of this new-fangled 3-D technology.
Last year was a banner year for movie ticket sales, and 3-D films like Avatar were responsible for the gross majority of the jump. Looking to test consumers' willingness to pay big bucks for funny glasses, theater operators are hiking prices beginning today at AMC, Regal and Cinemark theaters.
Luckily, Houston doesn't seem to be jumping on the national bandwagon, even though five major 3-D films are set for release in the coming three months. I made some calls (note that each theater is different) and found that The Woodlands Cinemark hasn't raised any prices and the Edwards on Weslayan is only raising regular ticket prices — and only by 50 cents.
The AMC on Dunvale is experimenting, and raised 3-D prices a dollar to $13.50. But we're still far better off than the Yanks — a 3-D Imax film at a New York City AMC will cost you $19.50.
Guess it's good to be in Houston.
