Something to look forward to on a Monday
Your last chance to see the Vivian Girls for the price of lunch
Thank God, most up-and-coming buzz bands still understand that to eat they must play ... anywhere and everywhere they can.
This bit of desperation makes for a nice bit of artistic runoff for Houston from the South by Southwest music conference in Austin held about this same time every year.
As music geeks (i.e. music journalists) from all over the world clamor for wristbands and passes to see the "next big thing" in the Lone Star capital, the bands are similarly scrambling to find dates to play in the region to justify the trip to the overhyped festival and to help pay for gas money home.
Naturally, Houston's plethora of club stages and army of pierced and tattooed youth are a savory target.
Cha-ching!!
There are a dozen or so SXSW bands dotting the Houston club landscape this week and one of the most interesting is the Vivian Girls.
Hailing from Brooklyn, this post-riot-girl trio is everything that is great about independent music and the ability to distribute music fast in the digital age.
Guitarist/vocalist Cassie Ramone, bassist/vocalist Kickball Katy and drummer Ali Koehler have turned their knack for nice hooks, naughty tendencies and a big thump into two albums and tours with the late Jay Reatard (R.I.P. my friend. We barely got to know your musical genius) and Sonic Youth among others.
The group's lo-fi punk aesthetic has now made them a buzz band at SXSW which means this might be the last time to see them for the price of a lunch before they graduate to bigger (and more expensive) stages.
Vivian Girls, 9 p.m. tonight at The Mink
Tickets $10-$12
