Texas Girl
Miranda Lambert dishes on Lady Gaga & the need to out-rock Blake, showing Rodeostaying power
After four consecutive years, no one could argue that Miranda Lambert doesn't know how to give a great RodeoHouston performance.
"It's good to be home tonight, y'all!" Lambert told the crowd after starting off her set with "Fastest Girl in Town." In a white sun dress, black fringed leather vest, sparkly boots to rival Reba McEntire's and a pink guitar, Lambert owned the stage, whether rocking out on her guitar or skipping around her set with a candy red microphone.
"I wrote this song in a state of ticked off and as we all know hell hath no fury like a Texas woman scorned," said Lambert before breaking into "Baggage Claim."
Lambert has plenty of sassy hits, including "Kerosene," "Gunpowder and Lead" and "Only Prettier," and it was clear from her spirited take and over-the-top expressions that she enjoys performing them as much as the crowd loves hearing them.
Playing up her considerable charm, Lambert broke up the set with stories about her tattoos, sitting next to Lady Gaga at the Grammys and how she loves cold beer and chicken fried steak too much to ever be a typical music industry size zero.
"I wrote this song in a state of ticked off and as we all know hell hath no fury like a Texas woman scorned," said Lambert before breaking into "Baggage Claim."
For a high-energy show, Lambert's set also had some surprisingly poignant moments. "Over You," her latest single, was written about the death of her father-in-law, and Lambert told the crowd that she's suffered several losses recently. As she played "The House That Built Me" later in the set, she became visibly emotional, at one point appearing to wipe a tear from her eye.
Though Lambert mentioned husband Blake Shelton frequently (including admonishing the crowd to stand up because she didn't want to be outdone by his Houston Rodeo performance) he didn't join her onstage as some speculated he might.
Instead Miranda was joined by the other members of her country girl band, Pistol Annies, for a slightly unpolished but crowd-pleasing performance of their hit single "Hell on Heels."
With four albums now under her belt, Lambert is the kind of country star that can put together an hour-long set of hit single after hit single, closing out the show with "White Liar." Giving a stellar performance rather than just a standard-issue concert, Lambert seems to get better every year.
If RodeoHouston is looking for another annual act now that Brooks & Dunn have retired, they won't do much better than this Texas girl.
