A journalist peep of mine asked me how he might go about getting an interview with Mary J. Blige while she was in town to play the Rodeo.
My reply was, "Good luck with that."
Then it dawned on me that this is Blige's genius. Even though the multi-Grammy Award winner has ascended to that "inaccessible diva" plateau normally reserved for Madonna, Cher and Mariah Carey, fans and followers still consider this soul princess someone they can still reach out and touch.
Perhaps, that's because even though Blige is a superstar who has performed for President Barack Obama and become an outspoken advocate for women the world over through the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now, Inc. (FFAWN), that "girl from the tough streets of the Bronx" demeanor has never left her.
Check her out at Black Heritage Day at RodeoHouston where the Blige the Diva will be warbling soulful new songs like "The One" and "I Am" from new album, "Stronger With Each Tear." With any luck Mary from the Block might show up to dust off some older hip hop beats like "Not Gon' Cry" and "Be Happy."
