Lady Gaga's Born This Way video is out and it's a macabre monster
The official music video for Lady Gaga's Born This Way — the lead single from her latest album — is out, and it's macabre, to say the least.
Although I particularly loved the Dia de Los Muertos-inspired makeup in one scene, the seemingly celebratory anthem was at odds with the video's dark (figuratively and literally) setting of a "government-owned alien territory in space."
There, Gaga is born (more than once) in graphic and goop-y detail, in birth scenes that are more insect than human. After a long opening monologue in which Gaga sets up her "manifesto of the mother monster," she appears ready to dance with the album's requisite face and shoulder implants, and it's then that video finally takes off.
Ironically, even with her creepy skin implants and the vid's overall (and oft-contrived) weirdness, this is the most au natural I've seen Gaga go. She's barefoot, dancing in a simple bra and panty set, hair loose and makeup comparatively simple. And although I'd liked to have seen more righteous anthem and less alien placenta, the energy is contagious, and I like the song better after having seen the video.
