Big band, no badges
Should you care that The Strokes are playing a free show at SXSW?
When you're rich, famous and everybody loves you, money is no object.
But when your fear of irrelevance is only countered by your need to sell albums to maintain viability, any means to money (even later rather than sooner) may be the driving force.
We're not sure which school of thought fueled the decision, but enthusiasts of last decade's critically-acclaimed The Strokes will certainly have more beer money jangling in their Timbuk2s at South by Southwest (SXSW) this year.
That's because The Strokes will deliver their signature brand of garage-y, post-punk-y, indie rock at Auditorium Shores Stage at Lady Bird Lake for zero dollars and zero cents during SXSW this year.
Yup. The show, scheduled for March 17, is completely free, meaning "no badges, no lines, no nothin'!"
We can't quite believe it either. Big name, big band, big hiatus, big new album, big shoes to fill, big questions for The Strokes to answer.
"Are we still relevant?" "Does anyone even care about us anymore?" "Do we even want to make music anymore?"
It's a big step out of near-oblivion, that's for sure. We're keeping our fingers crossed for a great big comeback.
