Whip-its, incense or exhaustion: What caused Demi Moore's meltdown?
When newly single Demi Moore (who has held on to her Twitter handle @MrsKutcher) was admitted to the hospital for treatment of "exhaustion" this week, most of us assumed she did what most aging movie stars divorcing their much-younger, philandering spouses do: Popped a bunch of xanny bars and had herself a vodka narcotics cocktail.
Instead, it seems Moore's fervent clutching to all things youthful — she spent the weekend partying with 23-year-old daughter Rumer's posse at the Roosevelt Hotel — extends even to her drug choices. Reports of the star's emergency room visit at first maintained that Moore was doing Whip-Its, a sudden rush of nitrous oxide gas (also used at your local 1980s dentist's office) usually reserved for 17-year-olds at basement parties.
Moore apparently did enough rounds of brain cell-popping to induce a seizure, TMZ reports, which led a friend to call 911.
But when the call was released Friday, it appears Moore may have been ingesting something else: An unidentifed woman told the 911 operator that Moore "smoked something — it's not marijuana, it's similar to incense" and she "seems to be suffering convulsions," according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
Her representative released the standard celebrity statement: "Because of the stresses in her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health. She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family of friends."
Moore's troubled behavior has lost her a role in the new biopic about porn star Linda Lovelace. E! reports that Moore has been replaced by Sarah Jessica Parker, who will portray feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the movie, which is scheduled to begin shooting Monday.
Meanwhile, Kutcher is partyin' partyin' in Brazil, with no comment on his soon-to-ex-wife's troubles.
Lingering questions:
- Can't movie stars afford better drugs than whipped cream canister-grade analgesia?
- How many Whip-Its does a person have to do to induce a seizure? (More than five.)
- How upset can a person feasibly get over a guy named "Ashton"?
