Cynthia Woods drops to No. 5 in the country: Woodlands concert mecca can't keepup
What recession?
Money concerns aren't getting in the way of Houston-area residents in want of musical entertainment. The Woodlands' Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion ranked fifth in Pollstar magazine's list of the Top 100 Amphitheaters Worldwide.
For the ranking, Pollstar gathered ticket sales between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011. The Pavilion sold 277,099 tickets in that period.
Contributing to those sales were eight sold-out shows: Arcade Fire, Jimmy Buffett & the Coral Reefer Band, Stevie Nicks, The Buzz/Bud Light Weenie Roast, Kid Rock with Sheryl Crow, Maroon 5 and Train, Journey with Foreigner and Night Ranger and Buzzfest XXVII.
"The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion consistently ranks in the top five amphitheaters for total tickets sold each year. We are fortunate to be located in a strong market and have as our partner, Live Nation, the No. 1 concert promoter in the world," Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion, said in a statement. "The venue itself, its location and our staff also contribute to our success."
Ahead of the Pavilion was DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Mich. (No. 1), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo. (No. 2), Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va. (No. 3) and Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 4).
But sales are down compared to the prior year: In Oct. 2010, the Pavilion ranked No. 2 in the world from a period between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, 2010. Ticket sales for that period totaled 307,489.
