Salvation Army of Greater Houston 'desperately' needs donations for Christmas gifts, freeze assistance, and more
One of Houston's most enduring and familiar charitable operations is in “desperate” need this holiday season.
The Salvation Army of Greater Houston has announced that while donations have come in from thousands of Houstonians, its 2023 Red Kettle Campaign is falling “desperately short” of its goal.
This shortage comes as the venerable nonprofit prepares for Christmas assistance programs. More than 12,000 children and seniors have registered to receive new unwrapped gifts from The Salvation Army of Greater Houston, per press materials. The cherished gift-giving tradition is part of the Salvation Army's annual Christmas program known as the Angel Tree.
Here in Houston, local funds raised during the Red Kettle Campaign, which is the largest and oldest charitable fundraiser of its kind in the U.S., assist the Greater Houston Area Command across Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties.
Additional Red Kettle campaign-driven operations include year-round youth and senior programs, drug and alcohol rehabilitation services, shelters, financial assistance, and disaster relief.
Along making the season bright for local kids and seniors, the Red Kettle Campaign is especially crucial as Houston prepares for a dramatic freeze during Christmas week.
“We are incredibly blessed to have such generous supporters of our Red Kettle Campaign, which supports life changing programs at The Salvation Army of Greater Houston, said Salvation Army area commander Major Rob Webb in a statement. “This is a tough year for so many in our community and the needs of the citizens we help are far greater this year than in years past.”
Those interested can conveniently donate funds online, or drop cash donations into the red kettle while shopping at storefront spots. Mail donations can be sent to Salvation Army of Greater Houston downtown headquarters located at 1500 Austin St. In-person donations can be delivered to the organization's multiple drop-off locations found here.
“We hope anyone with the means to donate will consider doing so, there are red kettles located outside of local stores and folks can always donate to our virtual red kettle online at SalvationArmyHouston.org,” Webb added. “The bottom line is we are in desperate need of additional funds this year, so please consider making a life changing donation.”
