what a glow-up
Heights Kroger unveils extensive renovations — more cheese, please
After five months of construction and renovation, the Kroger store at the intersection of North Shepherd Drive and 11th Street in the Heights has unveiled new features and an array of improvements that should make for a better shopping experience.
“Kroger is excited for our neighbors to experience our newly redesigned store right here in the heart of The Heights. Our store is an essential part of this neighborhood, and I, along with my amazing team of 163 associates, cannot wait for everyone to come in, see the changes, and feel right at home,” said Jeff Bailey, store leader for the Heights Kroger.
Located at 1035 North Shepherd Drive and famously tagged Death Star Kroger by the late, Houston-based writer John Nova Lomax, the store now features an expanded range of amenities for shoppers. These include larger sections for fresh fruit and sushi, refurbished deli and meat departments, streamlined pickup areas, and a redesigned floral area.

In 2010, this location underwent a significant cosmetic upgrade that added nearly doubled its footprint. In addition to the extra space, the Kroger became one of the chain’s best examples of a prestige wine and cheese location. The wine department is huge, with a selection that rivals many dedicated liquor stores, and now it contains a full wine bar.
Part of the current renovation involves an upgraded “cheese experience” from Murray’s Cheese. Visitors have over 300 specialty cheeses to sample, as well as selections of cured meats and other dainties. These departments essentially function as gastro-boutiques within Kroger, further cementing the location as one of the finest in the city.

“Kroger has proudly served Houston since 1955, and it remains an exciting, innovative market for us,” said Jesse Avelar, vice president of operations for Kroger. “This year alone, we are making a multi-million-dollar investment to remodel 18 stores across Greater Houston as well as enhancing our grocery pickup and delivery services to continue providing our customers with a fresh and friendly shopping experience.”
Later this year, Kroger will announce plans for an in-store restaurant to complement the shopping experience. In the meantime, shoppers get to enjoy one of the most extensive glow-ups in Houston grocery shopping history.
