12 good-natured Houston Earth Day events bloom with bike rides, parties, a movie in Memorial Park, and more
Once a novel idea when it was launched on April 22, 1970 in the United States, Earth Dayhas now grown into a global event. An estimated 1 billion people take place in coordinated events across the world in more than 193 countries, per the organization.
This year's thee is Invest In Our Planet, and in the Houston, locals can do just that thanks to a range of activities. From planting trees to celebrations at Houston's crown jewel, Memorial Park, these activities aim to grow blooming love and care for our planet.
Here's a quick rundown of Earth Day 2023 events happening all over the city (events are listed in order of start time).
The Soul Food Public Art Projectwill have an Earth Day studio workshop. Join them for a hands-on art experience as they create a new public art installation in Houston's historic Sunnyside community. 9:30 am.
TheChick-fil-Aat Louetta Crossing in Spring will invite kids to paint a planter on Earth Day. Each child will be provided paint and a planter while supplies last on a first come, first served basis. 10 am.
Houston Arboretum & Nature Centerwill salute Earth’s heroes during its Earth Day celebration. Enjoy interactive booths, nature hikes, fun displays in the Discovery Room, and learn how to be a hero for our planet. 10 am.
Discovery Green will have its annual, Green Mountain Energy Earth Day festivities. With this year’s theme focusing on water, this will also feature the Houston Public Works’ popular Water Works Festival. Noon.
Tanger Outlets Houston in Texas CIty is swarming with celebration in honor of Earth Day. Swing by the lagoon area where they will honor their rooftop honeybee hive with an informative, in-person workshop, led by their resident beekeeper. Noon.
Cameron Iron Works will have a family-friendly Earth Day. This event will include prize raffles, silent auctions, wine samples from Hye Meadow Winery, a wildlife conservation booth, and more. 2 pm.
The Earth Day celebration at CIty Orchardwill be a full-on party. Come out to the taproom to enjoy some of their 100-percent-apple ciders, live music, and some fun Earth Day activities. 2 pm.
Meet up at Rice Bikes and celebrate Earth Day by riding through River Oaks, before arriving back at the shop for a social. (Chaus lemonade provided!) This is a casual event and all individuals (and bikes) are welcome. 5 pm.
Rotary E-Club of Houston will have an Earth Day concert headlined by Shake Russell. All proceeds will benefit Rotary e-Club of Houston providing support to service projects in the area. 5 pm.
Memorial Park Conservancy presents a party in the park’s Eastern Glades. Expect an evening filled with educational activities for kids, delicious food trucks, and children’s story time. For even more goodness, the nature documentary Deep in the Heart, narrated by native Texan Matthew McConaughey depicting the incredible nature found throughout Texas, will be screened at sunset. By coming together to celebrate Earth Day, they hope to inspire and encourage others to appreciate the oasis of nature that we have in the center of Houston, and throughout the rest of the world. 6 pm.
Cross Creek Ranch in Fulshear will offer up food, giveaways, nature inspired activities, and a “Movie on the Hill,” starting at 8pm. Don't forget to bring your favorite lawn chair or blanket to get a good spot. 7 pm.
Sunday, April 23
Earth Sun Day at POST Houstonis an all-day celebration of the planet with several events slated throughout the day. It kicks off with Peace by Piece by Bounce Back Houston, a sustainably minded marketplace that sells and trades vintage apparel. After that, take in three awe-inspiring BMX performances presented by Perfection on Wheels. The day will culminate with a vibrant display of 2,000 solar lanterns, known as Little Suns, spread throughout the five-acre Sky Lawn and overlooking the downtown Houston skyline. 11 am.
