Miracle On I-45
How a real-life Santa Claus lost his reindeer on the Gulf Freeway and the policedidn't believe it
Commuters and their kiddos must have been caught by surprise this week when two reindeer escaped from the back of a trailer driven by a white-bearded man down the Gulf Freeway.
The reindeer, named Comet and Dancer and their Santa Claus (impersonator and owner Joe Norman) were en route to a Galena Park elementary school when the trailer's un-latched doors opened and the reindeer stepped out.
According to KTRK Ch. 13,
Luckily for Santa and his reindeer, morning rush hour traffic on I-45 and Bay Area was stop and go. Comet and Dancer ambled around on the freeway, walking between stopped cars and trucks. The Webster Police Department was flooded with calls reporting reindeer loose on the freeway.
"We did get several phone calls," Webster police chief Ray Smiley told the Houston Chronicle. "The first couple we didn't believe."
Luckily for children everywhere, the roving deer were eventually reined in by commuters and policemen, and were returned to the farm unharmed and ready to take the sleigh on Christmas Eve.
