Thanksgiving nightmare
I-10 reopens after massive traffic pileup near Beaumont; two Pearland residentskilled
Two Pearland residents were killed and dozens were injured during a massive Thanksgiving morning pileup on I-10 between Houston and Beaumont that involved more than 100 vehicles, including several tractor trailers and at least one tanker, and stretched for two miles.
Officials attributed the multiple accidents to dense early morning fog and speeding traffic close to the Jefferson/Chambers county line near Beaumont.
KHOU reports that in addition to the fatalities, at least 48 people were transported to the hospital for treatment and several were critically injured.
The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the dead as Vincent Leggio, 64, and his wife, Debra Leggio, 60. They died after their 2007 Chevrolet Surburban was struck by an 18-wheeler, authorities told the Houston Chronicle.
The westbound lanes reopened about noon and the eastbound lanes about 5 p.m., DPS said.
