The unofficial mayor of EaDo: Difference maker Felix Fraga on a lifetime in the East End
It was more than 80 years ago when Felix Fraga settled in Houston's East End. Ripley House, which opened in 1940, helped him stay in school and pursue a degree in social work at the University of Houston. He played baseball, found his wife Nelly and raised his family — all in the East End.
He still resides there, and many of the locals consider him the unofficial mayor of the area. Fraga has happily dedicated his life to serving his friends and neighbors, especially the youth, in his community.
As part of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15), 713News honored Fraga with a Houston's Voice video vignette profiling his life and accomplishments.
"By being here so long I sometimes get credit for a lot more than what I was really able to do," he humbly says in the video.
But Fraga's work for the Neighborhood Centers, Houston Independent School District, Houston City Council and the new Ripley House Middle School — not to mention the fact that a building is dedicated to his legacy (Felix Fraga Academic Building) on the Southeast Campus of Houston Community College — tells the story of a man who tirelessly gives back.
Watch the video, hosted by 713News' Cyndi Garcia, and journey with Fraga from his days as a student to a notable community leader.
