A town saver?
A full house: Galveston businesses press for casino gambling
In a survey conducted by Texas A&M University of 499 members of Galveston's Chamber of Commerce (which is owned by local business leaders), an enormous 79 percent of respondents said they thought island casinos would boost their businesses.
The survey, which is the first of its kind among Chamber of Commerce members, has reopened the long-running discussion of adding casinos to the tourist-dependent coastal town. Respondents also indicated that they will push for some local control of the casinos, if they are indeed permitted. More than half of respondents answered that they would support casinos only if the city were given the option to accept or reject casinos, and if voters had a say in their size and location..
Casino gambling is illegal in Texas, so the state legislature would have to decide to allow it before the Chamber of Commerce would have any local control. Galveston's Chamber of Commerce also expressed an intent to advance its interest in the gaming industry at the 82nd legislative session beginning in January.
Galveston's tourism industry has suffered since hurricane Ike, and many residents think casinos (like the ones in say, Biloxi, Miss.) would be an easy way to increase tourism as well as raise significant tax money for the state.
What do you think? Would you support gambling in Galveston? Would it make you more likely to visit the town more frequently?
