A Republican eyes Gabrielle Giffords' Arizona seat, but does he stand a chance?
There's at least one contender for Arizona's 8th Congressional District seat, and it's not Gabrielle Giffords, the famous survivor currently holding the office as she recovers in Houston from a gunshot to the head.
Arizona Republican State Senator Frank Antenori has become the first person to declare an interest in running for the seat by officially forming an exploratory committee. But Antenori says he isn't expecting to beat Giffords at the ballot box.
"If she is capable and has the physical ability to represent the district, I think she would be a formidable — almost unbeatable — foe," Antenori told the Associated Press.
Antenori says he is just making plans in case Giffords decides not to run for re-election. Giffords made a surprise appearance on the House floor earlier this month to cast a vote to raise the debt ceiling, but has yet to give an indication about her future plans, and her name has been floated to run for the Senate seat currently held by retiring Sen. Jon Kyl.
The deadline for Giffords to announce her intention to run for re-election is not until May 2012, and Antenori says he will wait to announce his intention to run until the first months of the new year, after the Arizona legislature finalizes redistricting. If Giffords does run for a fourth term, she'll have literal as well as political capital — according to the AP, her friends have raised $639,000 for re-election on her behalf.
Do you think Gabrielle Giffords should run again? And if she chooses to run, would any Republican be able to beat her?
