Friends rally to aid Houstonian injured in bizarre barbell accident with nohealth insurance
Bocados is usually closed on Sundays, but it was standing room only at the friendly Montrose neighborhood restaurant this past weekend as friends of Amy Olson rallied to raise funds for her health care after she suffered a bizarre accident while working out.
Olson, who recently turned 30, was injured while working out at a friend's apartment workout room a little over a week ago when a 135-pound weight accidentally fell on her throat. She was rushed to Memorial Hermann hospital, where she is recuperating from severe injuries to her larynx. She remains hospitalized but hopes to be released later this week.
"We know it's not going to take care of everything, but it gets things started," said Elizabeth Gravender, who co-organized the fundraiser.
When friends found out that Olson has no health insurance, they rallied to support her. Bocados owners Terry Flores and Lily Hernandez opened the restaurant for a barbecue dinner, raffle and silent auction, with all proceeds going to Olson's recovery fund. Several hundred friends and supporters filled the restaurant and the outdoor patio as Deejay Kittie spun dance tunes.
Among the silent auction items that garnered attention: A football autographed by Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson and a pair of Louis Vuitton sandals. Raffle items included a painting by Houston artist Blake Torres, tickets to a Houston Dynamo game and Texans gift baskets. One friend even sold jars of homemade salsa and donated proceeds to aid Olson.
The hastily-organized event brought in more than $8,000.
"We know it's not going to take care of everything, but it gets things started," said Elizabeth Gravender, who co-organized the fundraiser.
