Hot hoax: Melting playground equipment myth throws the city into extreme heatmania
You know that Perrier commercial where the whole city is melting, and this girl's only relief is her bottle of ultra-expensive water, which then also melts?
If not, here:
It's a scene that didn't seem to require any special effects here in Houston. A photo went viral Tuesday of a Houston-area playground seemingly melting away, and was propelled by several news outlets who reposted the image as fact and used it to report on the force of Houston's 100-plus degree temperatures.
The photo turned out to be a hoax — but Houston's dangerous heat index is real. Houston is on a streak of 11 straight 100 degree days, tying for the second longest such run in city history. By Friday afternoon, the streak could reach 12, closing in on the all-time record of 14 straight 100 degree days set in 1980.
The melted plastic playground was actually the result of a nearby fire in Mission Bend on June 12 though. The star at the center of the solar system wasn't involved in this melting.
