NBTA at George R. Brown
Business travel convention lures big names (Condoleezza Rice included), big bucks & big parties
Everybody be on your best behavior.
The National Business Travel Association's (NBTA) annual convention hits Houston early next week and is expected to bring nearly 6,000 attendees to the George R. Brown Convention Center between Monday and Wednesday, including the famous faces of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Virgin Atlantic Airlines founder Richard Branson and Tour de France champ Lance Armstrong. Rice, Branson and Armstrong are all keynote speakers.
Many of the attendees are expected to arrive on Sunday for what's billed as "the business travel event of the year."
The three-day meeting of corporate travel professionals is projected to bring nearly $6 million to the city that's hosting the CEOs of Carlson Wagonlit, Starwood, Southwest Airlines, Continental Airlines and Etihad Airways.
The convention's maze of booths brings corporate travel managers together with travel suppliers, and If attendees like what they see, they're likely to book more corporate meetings in Houston in the future.
But it's not all business. Expect a slew of swanky soirees to accompany the big wigs in town, including SkyTeam's 900-person affair at the Hobby Center Tuesday — which will include cirque acts and a dry ice bar.
We wonder what the new Continental/Untied has in store ... or if they can agree on a party planner.
