Borders gets buried: Remaining bookstores to be liquidated and closed "quickly"
Barnes & Nobles not your scene? Too bad, because it's about to be the only big, bad bookstore around.
Borders announced it was closing for good Monday after filing for bankruptcy in February. Back then, the Ann Arbor-based chain announced then it would close 30 percent of its nationwide locations, leaving 399 stores in operation.
Those stores are now expected to be liquidated for closing, and Borders' remaining 10,700 employees will be losing their jobs. Borders still must ask a judge to approve a liquidation sale on Thursday, but that's largely considered a formality.
Houston has four Borders locations left in operation — including the high-profile Kirby and Galleria stores. Liquidation sales at some locations could begin as early as Friday (if the judge approves the liquidation), so get rid of your gift cards while you can.
There were reports Monday that Books-A-Million is in talks to buy a small number of Borders' current stores, maybe as many as 50 of the remaining 399, according to Reuters. But those came out before the liquidation announcement and it's unsure where those negotiations now stand.
