Just . . . Woah
A shocking verdict in the Casey Anthony trial: Out of jail this week?
A Florida courtroom gallery and a national TV audience listened in as Casey Anthony was found not guilty of capital first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter of a child and aggravated child abuse Tuesday afternoon. Anthony is not guilty of any of the most serious charges, with the jury only convicting her of lying to authorities.
Anthony was accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in 2008. Her murder trial has played out on national television to a rapt audience, due in part to Anthony's layered lies and invention of fictitious characters as well as her own family's apparent doubts about her innocence.
The verdict was reached after only 10 hours of deliberation following 33 days of testimony that received daily media analysis.
While prosecutors argued that Anthony killed her daughter because she'd gotten in the way of the mom's "carefree lifestyle," defense attorneys maintained that the prosecution case was based on circumstantial evidence. Opinion polls conducted during the trial indicated that most Americans believe Anthony is guilty.
"Casey did not murder Caylee. It’s that simple," Anthony attorney Jose Baez said in a televised news conference following the verdict.
Anthony was found guilty only on four counts of providing false information to law enforcement. Sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday morning. CNN commentators pointed out that Anthony could be credited with timed served for those four misdemeanor counts and speculated that she could even get out of jail as early as this week.
Anthony has spent almost three years in jail. She cried when the first not guilty verdict was announced.
