Target's grocery push sets up a showdown with Walmart in the Heights
In an an epic national remodeling, Target is expanding all stores into the fresh food market. Part of a new format called "PFresh," Target will now shelf packaged meats, produce and baked goods.
The area will have a modern open-market grocery layout. The tactic mimics that of its arch enemy, Walmart, which currently does 51 percent of its business in food. And one of the biggest showdowns in this new battle figures to take place in the Houston Heights.
With Walmart planning to move a supercenter into the Heights, right near a massive Target, the Heights will find itself something of a ground zero for the kicked-up competition between the two retail giants.
Hopefully the revamped stores will at least have customers reaching for healthier snacks.
While not a full supermarket, Target will now represent every single shopping category — except one. To make room for the foodstuffs, gardening supplies are getting axed, so green thumbs should plan for an extra stop at the local nursery ... which may or may not solicit tangential business for Tiny Boxwoods.
