Lucky number? Texas weighs in at 13th in nationwide obesity study
Shocking news: More than a quarter of all Texans are obese. But what might surprise you is that we're not even in the top 10 of fattest states. We're number 13.
What luck.
The ranking comes from a new report from the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It's the seventh annual "F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2010" report, which finds that nearly 29 percent of Texans are considered unhealthy. Something to consider the next time you place an order for that triple-crème cheese at 13 Celsius.
In case you're spooked by our 13th slot, you'll be comforted to know that we're further up — at number seven — for childhood obesity, with about 20.4 percent of Texas' kiddos considered obese.
Our leafy capital, however, is far from in trouble — two recent rankings state that Austin's considered among the healthiest cities in the U.S.
With the new report, it's been revealed that more than two-thirds of states, or 38, have adult obesity rates higher than 25 percent, with Mississippi taking the lead with 33.8 percent. God bless America.
